UGC extends MPhil, PhD thesis submission deadline due to academic loss amid COVID

Universities and higher educational institutions can give another extension of up to six months beyond 30 June for MPhil or PhD thesis submission on case-to-case basis after reviewing a student's work.

MPhil/PhD Thesis Submission Deadline: University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to extend the deadline for MPhil, PhD thesis submission. An official from UGC told PTI that Universities and higher educational institutions can give another extension of up to six months beyond 30 June for MPhil or PhD thesis submission on a case-to-case basis after reviewing a student's work. The update cam to light on Monday, i.e. May 9, 2022.

Deadline extension due to academic loss amid COVID-19

According to the reports, UGC has granted another extension in the thesis submission deadline for MPhil and PhD students in view of the study time lost due to COVID-19. Earlier, UGC announced the first extension to the submission date in June 2020, for the first time. However, later the Council kept extending the deadline further every six months due to prevailing the COVID-19 situation.

"The UGC has approved that an extension of up to six months beyond June 30 may be given to M.Phil and PhD students for thesis submission by their respective higher educational institutions on case-to-case basis based on the review of the students' work by the Research Advisory Committee and on recommendation of the supervisor and head of department," the UGC official informed.

UGC allows MPhil, PhD admissions 2022 viva through offline mode

With the declining cases of the novel coronavirus, UGC has also allowed universities to conduct viva for MPhil and PhD admissions through offline mode. The decision came nearly after a gap of two years. UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain directed the vice-chancellors of universities and heads of other higher education institutions through a letter allowing them the option of considering conducting the MPhil or PhD viva-voce examination offline or through video-conferencing mode using various platforms.

The UGC asked institutions to move to the online mode of viva-voca during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
