UGC invited applications for participation in the 'Tomato Grand Challenge' 2023 to get innovative ideas and improved technologies in the Tomato value chain.
UGC Secretary Prof Manish R Joshi has written to Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) seeking the participation of students, teachers, faculty, professionals, start-ups and Indian companies in 'Tomato Grand Challenge' 2023.
The Ministry of Education has collaborated with the Department of Consumer Affairs and launched a hackathon Grand Challenge for ideas on technologies for the primary processing, storage and valorization of Tomatoes.
The Tomato Grand Challenge invited ideas for innovative, modular and cost-effective solutions to provide comprehensive strategic solutions for reducing losses while imparting value addition.
Improved technologies in the Tomato value chain that the Grand Challenge proposes to develop are expected to help reduce post-harvest losses and vulnerability to extreme price validity.
"The Grand Challenge is open to students, faculty, teachers, professionals, start-ups and Indian companies. The same can be accessed at https://doca.gov.in/gtc/. The participants can log in at https://gc.mic.gov.in/login. The last date for submission of the application is September 15, 2023. The Higher Education Institutions are requested to participate in this grand challenge and ensure maximum participation," reads the official notification.
Of late, the retail prices of tomatoes have skyrocketed throughout the country due to erratic weather conditions across the nation.
While speaking in Lok Sabha on Thursday, union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that tomatoes will be sold at INR 70 per kg in Delhi-NCR. This statement came amid the rising prices of tomatoes across the country. Addressing this issue, the finance minister said that National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Limited (NCCF) will hold a sale of tomatoes in Delhi and NCR at a subsidised price this weekend.
