The academic year for first-year engineering students is beginning on December 13. The step has been taken to make up for the loss caused due to postponement in the counselling process for engineering seats.

First-year engineering students at Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will have to spend extra hours in classroom as the university has asked all its affiliated colleges to take classes for two extra hours daily.

As per a report published in The Times of India, the academic year for first-year engineering students is beginning on December 13. The step has been taken to make up for the loss caused due to delay in the counselling process for engineering seats.

Not only this, colleges have also been asked colleges to work full day on Saturdays unlike earlier. They have also been allowed to operate on Sundays if there is a requirement. So far, colleges have been working for eight hours a day, five-and-a-half days a week, with Saturday being a half-day. Now, the schedule will change to six working days of 10 hours each.

“We have lost around three months due to the delay when compared to the normal schedule. With these measures, we are hoping to catch up on three weeks this semester with extra hours,” said VTU Vice-Chancellor Karisidappa. March 30 will be the last working day. Practical exams will be take place from April 1-April 8 and theory exams are scheduled to be held from April 11.

There will be a students induction programme of 105 hours, which will be completed in blended mode within 10-12 days.

The university will also introduce open-book exams for some of the engineering courses from the current academic year. The system will be introduced in streams such as civil, mechanical, electrical and architecture. According to university authorities, an official communication will be issued once the board of studies submits its recommendations.
