West Bengal Education Minister replaces governor, becomes visitor of private universities

A bill has been passed in the West Bengal Assembly to appoint the state Education Minister Bratya Basu as the visitor of private universities in the state, in place of Governor Jagdeep Dhankar. While the opposition BJP MLAs staged a walkout, the West Bengal Private University Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was passed.

Just when the education minister started speaking after the discussion on the Bill had been completed, the BJP MLAs began protesting shouting shame, shame. Even when he urged them not to leave their seats, the BJP MLAs walked out of the House.

The education minister resumed and accused the BJP of working against of the interest of the West Bengal people. The Bill was then passed by a voice vote. The Bill proposes to make the Education Minister the Visitor of 11 private universities in the state, replacing the Governor.

Earlier, the Assembly had passed a bill to replace the governor with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of all the state-run universities. The Governor had been in a turf war with the state government over lot of issues, including the functioning of the varsities. Though the BJP legislators did not agree to it however with 40 votes against the bill and 182 in favor, the bill was passed. 

In December 2021, the Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of private universities did not attend a meeting called by the governor even after he rescheduled it. Earlier, the state's ruling party leaders had accused Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar of working with the central government to harass the Mamata Banerjee government on key issues.
