- According to the 2022 World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index, the rule of law has declined at a global scale for 5th year consecutively
- 140 countries were analyzed and the findings reveal that rule of law declined in 61% of countries
- The factor, which measures Fundamental Rights, has declined in two-thirds of countries this year
- The factor, which measures Constraints on Government Powers, has declined in 58% of the countries
- Since 2015, the factor that measures freedom of opinion and expression has declined in 81% of countries; whereas, that for freedom of assembly and association has declined in 85% of countries

Alternative Industrial Development Model
- Hindustan Newsprints Limited (a centrally-owned public sector unit that stopped its operations four years ago), lies at the heart of Kerala’s alternate model of development

Climate Change and Health
- The 2022 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change: Health at the Mercy of Fossil Fuels has mentioned that increased reliance on fossil fuels increases the risk of disease, food insecurity and other illnesses related to heat
- From 2000-2004 to 2017-2021, heat-related deaths increased by 55% in India
- Subsidies provided for the consumption of fossil fuels cases decline in air quality, decline in food output, and increase in the risk of infectious diseases
- In comparison to 1985-2005, infants less than one year in age experienced an average of 72 million more person-days of heatwaves per year from 2012 to 2021
- For adults over the age of 65 in India, the number was 301 million person-days
- 2 billion potential labour hours were lost in India in 2021. The means a loss of income equivalent to about 5.4% of national GDP
Methane Alert and Response System (MARS)
- In order to track methane emissions, UN will be setting up a satellite-based monitoring system
- Methane Alert and Response System, or MARS, will allow the integration of data from a large number of existing and future satellites
- Methane has more potential to cause global warming as compared to carbon dioxide
- Methane comprises of about 17% of the current global greenhouse gas emissions
- Methane has few sources, hence it is easier to reduce its emissions
- A reduction of 30% in methane emissions by 2030 may avoid 0.2 degree rise in temperature by 2050
Tokhü Emong Bird Count
- Nagaland undertook its the first avian documentation exercise called Tokhü Emong Bird Count
- The exercise was organized by Wokha Forest Division and the Divisional Management Unit, Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP), Wokha, Nagaland and Bird Count India

- Measles outbreak was witnessed in Mumbai
- About Measles:
- Measles is caused by measles virus
- Measles virus, or Measles morbillivirus, is a single-stranded, negative-sense, enveloped, non-segmented RNA virus
- There are no known animal reservoirs of this virus. It gets transmitted via droplets (sneezing or coughing)
- Initial symptoms (10-12 days after infection): high fever, runny nose, bloodshot eyes, and Koplik's spots (tiny white spots on the inside of the mouth)
- Later on rashes develop
- Extreme complications include blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhea, and pneumonia
- It has no particular medical treatment

CRISPR
- CRISPR technology has been used to insert genes that allow immune cells to attack cancer cells, potentially leaving normal cells unharmed and increasing the effectiveness of immunotherapy
- This is the first time that scientists have used CRISPR technology for this purpose
- CRISPR technology removes specific genes and inserts new genes in immune cells. This allows the immune cells to recognize mutations in the patient’s own cancer cells
Malaria Vaccine
- Malaria kills nearly 600,000 people every year. Majority of this population includes children under the age of five in sub-Saharan Africa
- RTS,S/AS01 (Mosquirix) developed by GlaxoSmithKline was given WHO approval in October 2021
- Limitations of RTS,S/AS01 (Mosquirix): It has has modest efficacy and reduces severe malaria cases by only about 30% after four doses
- Another malaria vaccine, R21/Matrix M, developed by the University of Oxford in the UK, demonstrated an efficacy of 77% in phase 1 and 2 trials
- Details about vaccines:
- These contain a major protein that is found on the surface of the liver stage parasite, called sporozoite, and hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg)
- RTS,S has about 20% of the fusion protein, with the remaining 80% made up of HBsAg antigen
- R21 is made up entirely of the CSP fusion protein moieties
- RTS,S is formulated with an adjuvant called AS01

National Bio Energy Programme
- Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India has notified the National Bioenergy Programme
- The program will be for the period FY 2021-22 to 2025-26, and will be implemented in two phases

- Because of this drug resistance, it becomes difficult to treat illnesses caused by these microorganisms
- 360 cases of typhoid fever per 1,00,000 people, with an annual estimate of 4.5 million cases and 8,930 deaths (0.2% fatality rate) have been reported in India
- Recent research:
- Outer membrane protein A (OmpA) could restrict the entry of antibiotics into the bacteria
- Removing OmpA resulted in a greater intake of medicine in bacteria, leading to its death by disrupting its outer envelope
- This can also be used to develop novel antimicrobials for other pathogens
