The Union Government will now grant Permanent Commission to the women officers in the Indian Army. The Ministry of Defence has sanctioned formal letter for grant of Permanent Commission for women officers.

The official notice issued by the Ministry regarding this reads, “The Ministry of Defence has issued formal Government Sanction Letter for grant of Permanent Commission to Women Officers in the Indian Army, paving the way for empowering Women Officers to shoulder larger roles in the organisation.”

The notice further reads, “The order specifies grant of Permanent Commission to the Short Service Commissioned (SSC) Women Officers in all ten streams of the Indian Army. This includes Army Air Defence (AAD), Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), Army Service Corps (ASC), Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), and Intelligence Corps in addition to the existing streams of Judge and Advocate General (JAG) and Army Educational Corps (AEC).”

Indian Army is prepping up to conduct the Permanent Commission Selection Board for affected women officers. The selection board will be scheduled as soon as all affected SSC women officers exercise their option and complete requisite documentation.

Last year, Supreme Court (SC) had directed the Army to decide regarding grant of Permanent Commission to eight women Army Officers who had approached SC in 2010.

Through the CDS exam, women are inducted in Officers Training Academy for SSC (Non-Technical) Course. Indian Air Force through AFCAT inducts women officers in Flying and Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical) branches. They are granted Short Service Commission.
