Jal Jeevan Mission Status Report

The Ministry of Jal Shakti issued a status report for the Jal Shakti Mission, launched in August 2019, on July 21, 2020. The report was released almost after one year of the launch of the program. The following state made significant progress and achieved ten per cent of their self-proposed targets. Out of the total, 7 states - Bihar, Telangana, Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Mizoram have achieved over 10% of the target household tap connections they had fixed for themselves.

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in partnership with States to provide potable water in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on a regular and long-term basis through tap connections to every rural household in the country by 2024. 50% of 15th Finance Commission grants to Rural Local Bodies, i.e. Rs. 30,375 Crore, has also been earmarked for water supply and sanitation. The progress of the mission is being monitored on a day-to-day basis.

Union HRD Minister launches MANODARPAN

Union HRD Minister, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on July 21, 2020 launched the MANODARPAN initiative of HRD Ministry to provide psychosocial support to students for their Mental Health and Well-being.

The Minister further informed that the MANODARPAN initiative will be a part of ATMANIRBHAR BHARAT ABHIYAN, as a part of strengthening human capital and increasing productivity and efficient reform and initiatives for the Education sector.

It is a webpage named MANODARPAN created on the Web-site of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Webpage contains advisory, practical tips, posters, podcasts, videos, dos and don’ts for psychosocial support, FAQs and online query system. A National Toll-free helpline (8448440632) has also been set up.

South Western Indian waters separated for Merchant and Fishing Vessels

The Ministry of Shipping on July 21, 2020 has separated the operation routes of merchant's vessels and fishing vessels in South West Indian waters, considering the safety and efficiency of navigation. 

The Arabian Sea around the south-west coast of India is a busy sea route, with a substantial number of merchant ships passing through the area, along with a large number of fishing vessels operating in the area. It sometimes causes accidents between them, resulting in damage of property and environmental pollution, and in several instances has resulted in a loss of lives as well.

The coordinates of the routeing system in the south-west of Indian waters is notified by DG Shipping through M.S. Notice-11 of 2020. The new routes come into force with effect from 1st August 2020.

Indian Navy and USS Nimitz hold PASSEX in the Indian Ocean

Indian Naval ships and the United States Ship (USS) ‘Nimitz’ hold the Passage Exercise (PASSEX) near Andaman Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean Region.

PASSEX is an exercise done between two navies to ensure that the navies can communicate and cooperate in times of war or humanitarian relief.

The Indian Navy has recently undertaken several PASSEXs, which officials described as an opportunity to improve interoperability on the high seas.

ICC official postponed the T20 World Cup due to COVID-19

ICC on July 20, 2020 officially announced to postpone the T20 World Cup 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world. The T20 was scheduled to be played in Australia from October 18 to November 15, 2020. The ICC also announced the new dates for the T20 world cup. The T20 World Cup 2021 will be played in October – November 2021. But it is yet to announce the venue of the tournament.

India’s First Electric Vehicle Charging Plaza inaugurated in New Delhi

Union Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy Shri R K Singh inaugurated first public Electric Vehicle charging plaza at Chelmsford club in New Delhi on July 20, 2020. The charging Plaza was established by EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Limited) and NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council). The plaza is to host five Electric Vehicle chargers of different specifications.

Delhi government launched Ghar Ghar Ration Yojana

Chief Minister of Delhi launched Ghar Ghar Ration Yojana on July 21, 2020. The aim of the scheme is to deliver ration at the doorstep of the citizens of Delhi. It is a temporary arrangement in the COVID-19 times and will end after 7-8 months. Under the scheme, the Delhi government will deliver wheat, rice, flour and sugar in hygienically packed bags.

Lalji Tandon, Madhya Pradesh Governor, Passed Away

Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon passed away on July 21, 2020 at the age of 85. Tandon was an active BJP leader before becoming the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. He was elected as the member for the 15th Lok Sabha from Lucknow. Before Loksabha, he was also elected for the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh in 1978 and 1990. He has served as governor of the states of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. UP governor Aanandi ben Patel took additional charge of MP in June 2020 after he was admitted in Lucknow.
