UPSC Indian Economic Services (IES) 2020 Notification released. Read below details
Union Public Service Commission released the Indian Economic Services (IES) 2020 notification on August 11, 2020. Indian Economic Services (IES) 2020 exam will be conducted from October 16. The IES application window was also activated with the release of the IES 2020 notification. The candidates can fill the IES applications till September 1, 2020.
Earlier, UPSC has issued a notice for not conducting the IES exam 2020 because no requisition was received from the ministry of finance. But later on the request of the Ministry of Finance, UPSC decided to conduct the IES Exam 2020. The total number of tentative vacancies are fifteen. The number of vacancies notified in the official UPSC notification can be changed at the time of final selection.

How to apply for IES exam 2020?
- Go to the official website of UPSC – upsc.gov.in
- Click on the apply online tab given at the right navigation bar
- Click on the “online application for various examination”, a new window will appear
- Click on the Indian Economic Services Examination Part – I – Registration
- Follow the instructions and complete the Part – I Registration and proceed for Part-II
- Submit the application fee as per the category and submit the IES 2020 application.
IES 2020 Exam eligibility
UPSC IES 2020 notification defines the IES eligibility in detail. The following are the eligibility criteria for the IES 2020 exam.
Nationality
The candidate must be either a citizen of India or a
(b) Subject of Nepal
(c) The subject of Bhutan; or
(d) Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India; or
(e) person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) & (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Age
The UPSC considers the age of the candidate on August 1 of the exam year. So all the age calculations should be done from August 1, 2020.
- Minimum Age limit: 21 years
- Maximum Age limit: 30 years
The UPSC provides the age relaxation to the candidates based on their category as follows.

Educational Qualification
A candidate must have a Post-Graduate Degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/ Econometrics from a recognised University incorporated by of an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutes established by an Act Parliament or declared to be deemed as University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or a Foreign University approved by the Central Government from time to time.
The candidates appearing in their final year of Post – Graduate degree can also apply but they need to submit their final mark sheet/degree at the time of submitting the Detailed Application Form.
IES 2020 exam pattern
The IES exam is a two-stage selection process.
- Phase I – Written Exam
- Phase II – Viva-voce
The candidates should note that the interview is called Viva-voce. It means that instead of personality, the emphasis will be on the subjective knowledge of Economics.
IES 2020 Phase I Written Exam
Phase I written exam is an offline exam conducted at various UPSC exam centres across the nation. The exam consists of six subjective question paper.

The candidates who clear the written exam will be called for the viva-voce. The IES viva-voce has the maximum marks of two hundred. The IES result will be prepared through the merit list prepared by adding the written exam score and viva-voce.
