UPSC issued new guidelines for the IAS exam 2020. Read below for details.

UPSC_Tie_Breaking_Principle

The Union Public Service Commission has released a notification for resolving the tie-breaking between the candidates appearing in the IAS exam 2020. The new tie-breaking principle was introduced in the IAS exam and other generalist exams.

Latest: UPSC IAS Application 2020 closing soon. Apply Now

If two candidates have equal marks in the final aggregate total(final total as written in the mark sheet), the commission will give preference to the candidate

  • Whose sum of the marks of  IAS main Compulsory papers i.e Essay & General Studies papers and the Personality Test is greater
  • Age.

The first point makes it clear that in the case of a tie between two candidates, the sum of the marks in the General Studies paper and the Personality test(PT) will be taken into account and the person having more marks in such addition will be given priority in the rank. The better rank means priority in the final service allocation.

In case both the candidates have the same marks in the above situation, the older candidate will be given preference over the other candidate. It means the candidate who is born earlier will be given preference over the other.

This has reduced the importance of optional subjects in case of a tie between the two candidates. This will have a considerable effect in the final result and the candidates will endeavour to get more marks in the IAS General Studies papers in the IAS main exam and consequently increase in the competition in the IAS exam. Now the candidates will focus more on the IAS Main General Studies syllabus.

Before these changes, the tie-breaking principle considered only age criteria and preference was given to the older candidate. The IAS 2020 application process is going on and will end on March 3. The IAS prelims exam 2020 will be conducted on May 31 at various centres across the nation.
