Delhi University declared the exam results and about 41% students failed second year BSc Physical Science exam. Students were in rude shock as only 44% students managed to pass the exam while the 41% students were detained. It was conducted in May-June, 2011. Students who were badly affected are from Ramjas, Kirori Mal College (KMC), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU), and Hindu.

According to the sources, out of a total of 663 students across 12 colleges, only 291 managed to pass the exam and 274 students fall in the unsuccessful category. About 193 students are eligible for promotion to the third year but are required to reappear in the subject(s) they failed to clear. More than 29% of the students failed to clear one or more than one papers in the exam. 118 students out of 663 failed to clear the mathematics exam.

At the Ramjas College, only 57 students out of 108 failed whereas 22 managed to get the passing marks without any backlog. At KMC, the ratio has lowered down as only 16 of the 87 students managed to pass the exam whereas 49 students failed the exam. Likewise, at DDU, 14 students passed the exam out of 58, while 58 did not make the grade.

Teachers are blaming the syllabi for such poor performance. Students have also protested in front of Vice Chancellor's office and submitted a representation to the dean of examinations. Many of them are not high scorers like those in the BSc (Hons) program and the syllabi of the course encompass three honors courses-Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The Failure rate is unnatural and if the students have cleared the final assessments, I don't see why students failed the exam, said by a science faculty member at Miranda House. However, Dean of examinations, R.C.Sharma, said that they will examine all the factors before coming to any conclusion.
