Anti-ragging website promises action

With the commencement of the new academic year, the HRD ministry has launched an anti-ragging website so that students of universities, colleges and professional institutes can report ragging cases online. The UGC managed portal has been launched to provide swift response to complaints against ragging or harassment, reported the Times of India.

The portal is also supposed to maintain a database of students, expected to be connected to most universities at the end of the year. "Lots of young students have lost their lives, many lose their confidence because of this practice....Through this facility we want to ensure that culprits get strict punishment,'' HRD minister, Kapil Sibal told TOI.

Rajendra Kachroo, who lost his son to ragging at a medical college in 2009, has been closely associated with this anti-ragging project.  In a Deccan Herald report, Kachroo who has been entrusted with the management and monitoring of the portal and helpline under the UGC, said that a consistently large number of complaints emanate from medical colleges. Students can also lodge complaints by dialing the helpline number 18001805522. UGC acting chairman, Ved Prakash told TOI that cases of serious complaints will be transferred quickly to the police, the magistrate and head of the concerned institution. (Read more)

Besides the central government, states and several educational institutes have also taken stringent measures against ragging. The Haryana government has passed an anti-ragging ordinance which imposes hefty fine and imprisonment of institutional heads if they fail to prohibit ragging on their campuses. IIT-Patna’s new academic session started with a clear message from the institute’s director, Anil K Bhowmick that ragging in any form is banned on the campus. (Read full story)
