Many a student changes stream after Class XII, some out of despair, while others do it to give their career a new start.  But as we know everything comes at a price.

Nikita Shenai, 20, who decided to pursue a BMM (Bachelor's in Mass Media) was earlier in the science stream at Apeejay School, Nerul. But this change in stream led Nikita to face higher cut-offs than students coming from an Arts background.  For the arts students at South Indian Education Society (SIES) College in Nerul, the cut-off is 55% as compared to 75% for others.

Higher Cut-offs for students willing to change their stream

University of Mumbai has some of the most sought after courses such as BMM and Bachelor's in Management Studies (BMS) for which the university has allocated seats for students from varied streams. Thus it's an option for science stream students also, but with a higher cut off than their arts counterparts.

However, students are in favour of an entrance test as a justified option. Several colleges held entrance tests for the BMM and BMS courses till 2007. Marie Fernandes, principal, St Andrews College, Bandra said that the entrance tests conducted by each college were quite subjective, hence they were cancelled by the university.

However, institutes such as Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) University, Vile Parle, and St. Xavier's College used to conduct the entrance exams for some courses. The tests examine students on logic, mathematics, general knowledge and English. The St Xavier's entrance exam for the BMM course comprised of grammar, critical thinking, general knowledge and data interpretation sections, respectively.
