Loyola College was started by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1925 mainly to provide university education "in a Christian atmosphere for deserving students," especially Catholics. However, it takes in other students, too, irrespective of caste and creed. This private college became autonomous in 1978 but it is still affiliated to the University of Madras. In October, the University Review Commission for extension of autonomy recommended to the university to extend the college's autonomous status for another five years. The college admits women only in the BA programme in French, BSc in visual communication, and all postgraduate programmes, except MA in philosophy
The college is known for commerce and economics. It has day and afternoon shifts and runs part-time/evening continuing education courses as well
Ethiraj College for women

The college was founded in 1948 by VL Ethiraj, a Dublin-trained barrister in Madras, who was the first Indian to become Crown Prosecutor under the British Government. "He believed in the dictum that educating a man is educating an individual, educating a woman is educating the entire family." The college became autonomous in 1999 and is still affiliated to the University of Madras
The UGC recognised Ethiraj as a College with Potential for Excellence in 2004-05
Under the aided stream, it offers BA in economics, English literature, history, tourism and travel management, BSc in advanced zoology and biotechnology chemistry, plant biology and plant bio technology, physics, mathematics, nutrition, dietetics and food service management, BCom (commerce /corporate secretaryship)

Stella Maris College

"What's interesting is the integrated courses offered by the colleges, say, a BCom with computer applications," says Jayaprakash Gandhi, a Chennai-based career consultant and analyst.

Presidency College

Like some others, Presidency College evolved from schools. When the University of Madras was founded in 1857, Presidency College was affiliated to it. In 1870, the college moved to its present location in Kamaraj Salai, opposite Marina Beach. It is known for geology and arts.
