Delhi Govt increases OBC Quota to 27%

Delhi Government has increased the OBC reservation from a 21 per cent to 27 per cent in an all government institution. This action is said to be an attempt of drawing voters for the Municipal Corporation elections in April. This sudden 6 per cent increase in quota decision will be applicable to the students from 2012-13 academic session onwards.

All the cabinet ministers gave the proposal a thumbs up on a cabinet meeting held on Monday. The government is said to have fulfilled its commitment of providing a 27 per cent quota to the OBC's. This decision will help in delivering education to the weaker sections of the society for better employment opportunities. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also said that the society will be largely benefitted due to this step.

However this step will not affect the General/Reserved category as the number of seats in each government institution will be increased by 12 per cent said the Delhi Chief Minister. Read More..

This proposal was first made in 2008 by the cabinet and decided to implement it by 2009. The government first reserved 5% seats for OBC's in 2009-10, which was increased to 15% the year after and to 21% in 2011. It has been implemented in all central educational institutions like Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi.
