I am first-year student. From the very first day of college, I have lost all the seriousness towards studies. I have few friends but I don't even spend that much time with them. It seems that I have become very cool and don't feel anxious about anything including my studies. When I do sit down to study, I feel sleepy. What should I do?

Evolving an effective plan for a career is integral to adolescent life. It seems that after finishing school, you feel studying has come to an end. College is a very easy life compared to school. There's no one standing on your head and asking you to study. So, we tend to become very casual about life. However, if you let this time slip by, you may get stuck later on in life and regret it later. This is the time when you have to take serious career-related decisions and work towards it.

You may not be spending too much time with your friends, but obviously you must have observed this ‘cool and careless' nature in people around you. You have to decide for yourself, if you want to continue like this or want to make something out of your life. If you do, then you need to get your act together and start taking life seriously. Studies and fun can happen side by side. You just have to learn to strike a balance. Make a time-table for yourself and divide your time accordingly for studies, games, friends etc. It is possible, you just have to be sincere. Go ahead and do it.

I am a Class 11 student. I have science as my subject. I feel very sleepy while studying. I get more rest than required. But, still I am very lousy at studying. Even, when I do feel like studying, I always like to do Maths and Maths only. Due to this my physics and chemistry marks suffer very highly. Please tell me what should I do?

Perseverance has a lasting value in most applied situations of life. You have very practical subjects which require a lot of practice. You're in Class 11 and next year you are going to have your board exams. You must have just opted for this stream and hence motivation could be low. So you need to work towards building your interest in the subjects. Maths is all about practising and hence, you find it easier and more interesting to do that only.

You should make a time table and divide your time. You need to give some time for physical exercises also. It is very important, because not exercising makes you lazy. Sleeping all day will not energise and motivate you to study. Spend equal time on all your subjects. Maintain a healthy diet. Don't eat very oily and heavy food as that tends to make us more sleepy. Practice meditation and yoga to improve your concentration and attention. Best of luck!

I am a class 12 student. I want to pursue computer/ aeronautical engineering. But I am colour-blind. Can I still pursue engineering? Will the problem be a hindrance in my career? If, yes, then what other careers can I choose?

Aeronautical engineering would require more stringent parameters for eyesight. However, computer, mechanical engineering would not be problem even if you're colour blind. So, yes you can still pursue engineering. It will not be a hindrance in your career. It is unfortunate that you cannot pursue aeronautical engineering. But you have to accept your problem and make your choices accordingly. So do not be disheartened, because there are a variety of options still open for you. Apart from the traditional branches which include civil, mechanical electrical engineering offers a vista of branches and specialization options. One can opt for B.E/B.tech in the disciplines of chemical, automobile, ceramics, marine engineering, environmental engineering. Remember, life is so much to do with finding the work you love to do within the constraints we all have. You will succeed like success. Best wishes
