Delhi University’s academic council has approved the launch of DU’s first course under the meta-college concept, this August. It has also approved the acceptance and transfer of credits by DU under the meta-university system. The implementation will need final clearance from the executive council. Launching of Masters in Mathematics Education along with Jamia Millia Islamia is also on the cards next month.

DU will be launching the meta-college on a pilot basis this year. It will allow students to tailor their own courses by choosing any of the modules offered by different DU colleges. Know more about DU’s meta-college concept

The meta-university to be launched this year was supposed to allow students to pick and choose courses from Delhi University (DU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and IIT Delhi. However, only JMI has managed to clear all the formalities in time. Now, DU’s academic council has also given the green signal to the launch of the meta-university this year. IIT-Delhi and JawaharlalNehruUniversity may come on board next year. Read more about the launch of meta-university

DU will introduce B.Tech in Humanities course under the meta-college this year, which is likely to start from August 15. The four-year degree program will have 50% curriculum from the existing courses in DU colleges, while the rest of the course will be project oriented. Students will have the freedom to select specialization modules in any fields such as media studies, art and design, historical tourism, education and counseling. Admission procedure for the course will soon be announced. Students who have got admission in any of the DU colleges this year are eligible to apply for this course offered by the Cluster Innovation Centre. See details

For the Masters in Mathematics Education, DU and JMI will offer different subjects, based on their individual expertise and infrastructure. They will also share faculty and offer students to use resources at both places.

Since only Jamia has the approval right now, the onus of getting Masters in Mathematics Education under the meta-university approved in time lies with it now. The programme will have papers on English for media communication, advertising, contemporary India and the world, development journalism, media management, public relations and corporate communication, media law and ethics, mass communication theory and media research. If approved, DU and JMI will launch this course on August 15.

Out of a total of 120 members of DU’s academic council, 114 voted for the approval. Dissenting members were concerned about the culture of managing approvals via emergency meetings, bypassing various committees of the university. The course structure of the Masters in Mathematics Education programme, which had just one paper on Mathematics, also raised eyebrows. They were also concerned that if DU allows credit transfers from private universities, it may encourage privatization of education. Find out more
