Delhi University (DU) is set to take a step forward to decentralize the sports category admissions. It will be implemented from this year with increased monitoring. Last year, the trials went unsuccessful due to ambiguous guidelines and distorted weightage criteria for the sports category.

To examine the situation, a 16-member high-powered committee was formed in November 2011, which recommended decentralizing the admissions. Under this situation, the colleges will have to conduct their individual trials. The committee has also directed Delhi University Sports Council (DUSC) to devise a new policy for admission in sports category.

To keep an eye on the individual trials by colleges for admissions under sports category, DU is planning to set up a centralized committee. C S Dubey, chairman, DUSC told TOI that the admission criteria under sports category will be determined by three factors - fitness, certificates and trials.

Three different committees comprising of six to seven members each have been formed to devise the strategy for the new admission criteria taking into account the suggested factors. It has been also proposed to give equal weightage to both trials and certificates. A combined report of these committees will be considered for arriving at the sports admission policy. The process is expected to get over by the end of May. (Read more)
