Jamia Milia Islamia Declared A Minority Institution

In a historic judgment, Delhi's Jamia Milia Islamia has been declared a minority institution by the court. It will still teach multi-disciplinary secular subjects it is famous for and will accept students from all communities though. The minority status will only mean that it can now reserve 50% of its seats for Muslim students, while 50% seats will still be open for students from other communities.

Finance Minister Rains Hefty Grants To Leading Academic Institutions In India

Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee has granted special grants to following universities and institutions for academic year 2011-12:

  • Rs 10 crore each for setting up Kolkata and Allahabad Centres of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha;
  • Rs 10 crore for Centre for Development Economics and Ratan Tata Library, Delhi School of Economics, Delhi;
  • Rs 10 crore for Madras School of Economics;
  • Rs 100 crore as one-time grant to the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University at Pookode, Kerala;
  • Rs 20 crore for IIM, Kolkata, to set up its Financial Research and Trading Laboratory;
  • Rs 20 crore for Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu;
  • Rs 200 crore as one time grant to IIT, Kharagpur;
  • Rs 200 crore for Maulana Azad Education Foundation; and
  • Rs 50 crore each for Aligarh Muslim University's upcoming centres at Murshidabad in West Bengal and Malappuram in Kerala. 

 

Fake Pharmacy Colleges In Modi Nagar Under Fire

Students of D J College of Pharmacy and Oxford College of Pharmacy in the Modi Nagar area have launched protests against their respective managements, accusing them of making false claims of being recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). The fate of students hangs in balance because of the fake status of these colleges. 

 

LIC Exam Papers Leaked Hours Before The Test

The question papers of LIC examination were leaked hours before the test. The exam was held for the post of assistant administrative officer and was conducted in 160 centres across India in two sessions. The exam has not been cancelled. Delhi police has arrested a Delhi University graduate, Mr. Pawan Kumar, for selling the question papers for Rs 5 lakh each. 

 

MBA CET 2011 Strayed From Its Traditional Format

In a surprise move, Maharashtra's management common entrance test (MBACET) changed its pattern this year. Normally, considered a simpler option to the Common Admission Test (CAT) and the Management Entrance Test (MET), MBA CET 2011 was overall difficult with lots of changes in the ways questions are generally asked in the paper. It is expected that qualifying scores for the exam will also drop this year.

British Stakeholders Oppose Student Visa Curbs In UK

New student visa curbs in UK has not only sparked protests from India but has also caused stir in major stakeholders among Britain who are worried that the measures will adversely hit the international student market. International students contribute as much as 5 billion pounds to the British economy every year.
