Education Is Being Revolutionized Through Technology
Blackboard-less class rooms, IT-enabled educational tools, paperless exams, and classrooms without teachers, learning from home, and the list goes on and on.
This is what Indian schools and students would be experiencing in the coming years, and efforts are already afoot to make each school, in both rural and urban areas to create a high-end educational system to impart knowledge using modern techniques.
Ever since Kapil Sibal took over as education minister and announced the revamping of the Indian educational system, he actually stirred the hornets' nest, waking up the education system in India, which has been in deep slumber since Independence.
To add more sting to the educational revolution in India, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)'s Edusat has been silently creating more virtual classrooms in rural areas by connecting more and more schools with the education hubs.
Classrooms, which have smart boards to explain the concepts through some pre-recorded videos or visual displays, have received good response from students than the traditional system of teaching, according to the principal of a leading CBSE school in Chennai.
To move closer to IT-enabled classrooms, the school has been installing LCD monitors in all classes to make learning more interesting and interacting.
Teachers are getting trained to handle modern educational tools and instead of simply explaining about concepts they have been given relevant videos and visual slides from educational websites. To enable this, schools are tying up with service providers to get similar interactive or visual educational kits.
The next question that comes to mind is that, "Are we going to do away with the student-teacher interaction, writing examination on papers or attending schools on a daily basis."
Also, with the centralised curriculum is in the offing, does that mean we need less number of teachers as more students are going to be taught through one single broadcast?
This IT-revolution in education system would surely a welcome change for teachers in particular, as they need not take home bundles of examination papers or copy works and spend more midnight oil in correcting them as students would be entering their answers on computers and all class works would be given as projects.
By one school of thought educational revolution in India is the need of the hour as we are still lagging behind systems prevalent in the West.
Others feel that evolving systema would do away with certain traditional teaching methodologies. Though, we are not calling for abolishing the Gurukul system of education, we would surely miss the teachers-students interaction, writing on black board, writing exams on paper, etc.
At the same time, the new system of future education would surely revolutionise the education system in India, as it will give an opportunity to students to learn from the best available educational system across the globe.
The mushrooming of educational websites is also aiding students to prepare for examinations in a better way - teaching them on various topics online and helping teachers to prepare study and test materials, etc. These websites also provide career counseling for students and help them to choose their field.
From students sitting under the tree and listening to their teachers to students sitting in the comfort of their home and learning their lesson through Internet from teachers sitting far away - the education system in India has come a long way.
