The ambitious plan of Indian Institute of Management, Indore, of admitting students straight out of school into a five-year management programme plan has been called off. This IIM Indore 5 year programme Plan was called off after the Centre summoned the IIM director to the capital on Wednesday for an explanation. It is notable that a fortnight ago, the institute had come up with a proposal to allow students to leave after three years of undergraduation -with either a diploma or a degree.

Now, IIM has decided that students will have to complete five years after school to receive a diploma in management. The Human Resource Development ministry has conveyed its concerns to director N Ravichandran.

The HRD ministry has expressed that it does not like to interfere in academic decisions of the IIMs and that the IIM can run any programme. However, HRD ministry also suggested that the young students might get lured by the IIM brand, without understanding its implications.

Unlike the IITs, established under an Act of Parliament, the IIMs, cannot does not have the authority to award degrees, contrary to IIM Indore's claim on its website. The HRD ministry is also concerned that students will not hold any degree - ruling them out of many career options.

IIM Indore Director, Ravichandran, said that he is looking for possibilities of affiliating the IIM to a university, possibly a Canadian university, to allow the institute to award degree at the end of five years.
