Ever dreamt of pursuing your PhD in one of the top-notch institutes in London? Well if you ever did, then its good news for you as Imperial College London and its Indian supporters association, the Imperial College India Foundation, have launched a new scholarship programme for academically outstanding Indian students to study for a PhD at Imperial in London.

Under the initiative, Indian nationals residing in India can avail two full PhD studentships offered by institute and the Indian alumni. Applicants will be assessed on both academic merit and financial need, and priority will be given to students who have not already completed a degree at a higher education institution outside India.

The college has invited applications for study in the following departments:

  • Aeronautics
  • Bioengineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Computing
  • Earth Science and Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Materials
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Imperial College Business School

Eligibility:

 To be eligible for a Scholarship candidate must:

  • have been offered admission to study on PhD offered by the Faculty of Engineering at the College or by the Imperial College Business School, having applied through the normal application process;
  • display intellectual ability and leadership potential; and be committed to engaging with society and using their abilities to contribute to India on their return
  • be deemed in need of financial support in order to pursue their studies
  • have an adequate standard of English, i.e. at least 6.5 in IELTS;
  • demonstrate an intention to return to India within three (3) years of completing the PhD course at the College

However, priority will be given to candidates who have not been already completed a degree at a higher education institution outside India.

Components of the scholarship:

Each scholarship covers the full cost of (overseas) tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, some additional costs, and an airfare to India. This includes:

  • Maintenance allowance equal to Imperial’s minimum stipend allowance in any given year.
  • An arrival allowance
  • One return flight to India
  • Scholarships will support either three years of study for a PhD or four years in certain cases where the student is required to undertake a one year postgraduate degree prior to beginning their PhD.

Application Process:

  • Candidates need to apply directly to the College for PhD admission, using the standard registry application process.
  • Once they have applied, candidates need to download and complete the application form.
  • The form must be signed by the student's supervisor and head of department.
  • Thereafter, candidates need to submit the application form along with a copy of the PhD application and parental tax returns as one document to Clare Turner by Friday 29 March 2013.
  • Candidates will be informed of the outcome of the scholarship panel by the end of May 2013.
