Is Teaching a Demanding Profession?
In Education, a teacher is a person who provides curricular experiences and classroom instruction to learners. A teacher is meant to facilitate learning for an individual by creating a loving learning environment and providing adequate learning experiences.
These days, teachers are required to assist in learning outside the classroom by accompanying students on field trips and learning expeditions.
Also, the increasing use of technology, specifically that of Internet, has begun to shape the way teachers approach their roles in the classroom.
The teachers also are being seen as pedagogues. According to Wikipedia, "Teaching using pedagogy involves assessing the educational levels of the students on particular skills. Understanding the pedagogy of the students in a classroom involves using differentiated instruction as well as supervision to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Pedagogy can be thought of in two manners. First, teaching itself can be taught in many different ways, hence, using a pedagogy of teaching styles. Second, the pedagogy of the learners comes into play when a teacher assesses the pedagogic diversity of his/her students and differentiates for the individual students."
Teachers are meant to respect diversity among their students and never hurt their self-esteem. With the corporal punishment being banned, teachers are expected to value their students and sarcasm and attempts to humiliate students are seen as falling outside of what constitutes reasonable teacher discipline and code of conduct.
As a profession, teaching has very high levels of stress due to the factors like the amount of time spent in class, preparing for class, counseling students and travelling to teacher conferences; working with a large number of students with various needs, abilities, disabilities, and cognitive levels; learning new technology; changes in administrative leadership; lack of financial and personnel support; and time pressures and deadlines. While trying to deal with these issues teachers also have to deal with personal problems and issues.
