Karnataka to get 7 new govt medical colleges

The state of Karnataka will soon have seven new government medical colleges as the State Cabinet on October 18, 2012 approved to set up the same in the state.

Likely to commence from the next academic session, these proposed medical colleges will be established at Gadag, Haveri, Chitradurga, Kodagu, Chamarajnagar, Tumkur and Koppal. Five crore each and a sum total of Rs 35 crore have been set aside for the colleges.

There are plans to set up a government medical college in Gulbarga too. Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar told news reporters that the government is planning to set up additional medical colleges wherever the infrastructure prescribed by the Medical Council of India was available.

Besides medical colleges, the cabinet also has plans to set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Raichur. The Cabinet has also given its approval for starting two government engineering colleges at Deodurga in Raichur district and at Chikmagalur. A sum of Rs 50 crore has been earmarked for them.
