The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has added another feather on its cap by declaring the December 2010 Term End Examination (TEE) results of approximately three lakh students in the stipulated time frame of 45 days as per the ordinance.

It was a mammoth task for the Students Evaluation Department (SED) to evaluate around 11.7 lakh answer sheets and handle approximately 8 lakh assignments. The December 2010 TEE was held over a span of 24 days. There were approximately 3.7 lakh hall tickets sent across the nation to the students. We coordinated with 844 exam centres for 1677 courses, with the number of courses ranging between 55 and 97 per day.

Over 1200 evaluators drawn from prestigious institutions across the country and IGNOU faculty members were involved in the evaluation work. More than 97% results have been declared by the University and have been uploaded at 12:01 a.m. on 14th February 2011. The situation as on 23 February 2011, about 2% results have also been processed. Some minor issues related to results are being attended to, as large number of backlogs has also been cleared this time.

The university had decentralized the evaluation work to seven evaluation centres established in different parts of the country. Different measures were taken up in order to gear up the system in this direction. Keeping this in view, the university extended the Scheme of Spot Evaluation to the evaluation centres in Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Chennai, Pune, Guwahati and Kolkata. The evaluation of answer scripts at the evaluation centres were monitored by the senior faculty members, directors and examination committee/ standing committee on evaluation in order to meet the deadline.

The evaluation centres, under their supervision, tied-up with the local reputed educational institutions/ universities, if available, for evaluation of the answer scripts in their premises under the supervision of the evaluation centre. This type of arrangement was done where there were a large number of answer-scripts to be handled.

Continuous flow of result data was possible with the help of about 30 computer personnel and software engineers who were involved in the data processing in the Student Evaluation Division (SED) headquarters. The regional centers, study centres, schools of studies, directors, faculty members and the Pro-Vice Chancellors played an important role in getting the assignments evaluated and providing assignment grades to SED well in time. "This strategy of involving all those providing support to students need to be institutionalized for the continuous improvement," said Prof. P.R. Ramanujam, Pro VC, IGNOU.

The University also organises Convocation each year to confer the degrees & diplomas to the successful candidates. The Convocation is done through teleconferencing mode at the 44 Regional Centres. This year's convocation will be held on 2nd April 2011 and about 2.1 lakh students are expected to receive their degrees.
