Known for its arts and mass media courses, the college is located between Breach Candy and Peddar Road. Founded in 1934, it is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and comes under the governing body of the Society for Higher Education for Women in India.
The college has been given an ‘A' grade by NAAC (The National Assessment and Accreditation Council) in both 2003 and 2009. Sophia College offers several courses at the junior college, graduate and postgraduate level.
At the degree college level, the college offers three main courses - BA, BSc and bachelor's in mass media.
Among the UGC-approved courses is a certificate course in women's empowerment and a certificate course in cooking and baking. These courses fall under the Sophia Centre for Women's Studies and Development. The JN Heredia Centre for Value Education offers counselling to students.
