The Department of Public Instruction has formed a committee under Dr K Sameer Simha (retired lecturer of Vijaya Teachers College) to improvise on the National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education (NCFTE) 2009. It will release the first draft of the new curriculum for the two-year Diploma in Education (D Ed) course in March this year.

The new curriculum will focus on:

  • gender sensitization in teachers;
  • developing their leadership, communication and observation skills;
  • observing model lessons in schools; and
  • spoken English training.

Candidates will also practice teaching with stray lessons for two weeks and six weeks of internship in both years of the program.

The revised D Ed curriculum will seek professional development in prospective teachers. The revision suggests that for better results, there should be proper coordination between the D Ed course and annual calendars of primary schools. Also, children's experience should be taken into account in teachers' training. Comprehensive use of ICT in teaching is also suggested.

The paper is open to feedback and suggestions and can be viewed at the official website of the Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT), Government of Karnataka.
