Australia seems to be back on the radar of Indian students as the number of visa applications have increased after a sharp fall in 2010 after the racist attacks. The immigration department states that more than 1,83,000 international students were granted visas within 9 months period to March 31, 2012. The data suggests a 4.5 per cent increase in applications as compared to the same period last year.

 

Till March 2012, 19.5 per cent Chinese nationals and 14 per cent candidates of Indian origin were issued student visas among other international students. 14 per cent candidates were of Indian origin. Read More


More than 8,000 Indian students have reportedly applied for education visa in Australia within nine months to March 31, which represents an approximate increase of 120 per cent as compared to the number of applications last year. Read More

 

According to a report, a Monash University migration expert said that many of the students originally went to Australia to study cookery and hairdressing, but were in a spot following the Australian government's crack down on courses that were perceived as allowing easy access to permanent residency.

As per reports, more than 160 students were murdered in the year 2010 out of which 130 students were killed in Australia alone and 30 in Philippines. Consequently, there was a sharp decline in requests for student visas from India after attacks on Indian students in 2010. The Indian government had condemned the attacks. Read More

The recent increase in the number of student applications is good news for the Australian education institutes who had criticized the way Immigration Department was rejecting applications from international students. Talking of the recent changes in the visa application process making it easier for students, Melbourne-based migration and education consultant Jag Khairra added that the Australian government also worked hard to address fears about attacks on Indian students.
