Short course on Air Quality Management at IIT-B
The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) is all set to launch a short course on Air Quality (AQ) Management on December 6 and 7, 2012. The course is offered by McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environment Partnership (MAGEEP) in collaboration with India Air Quality Resource Group and ESIP Air Quality Work Group.
This short course is for air quality managers and members of the academic field who are interested in air quality analyses for more effective mitigation of air pollution. The course aims on capacity building for assessing the nature and sources of air pollution with focus on particulate matter.
Listed below are the topics to be covered during the program:
Day 1: Devoted to technical topics and to provide attendees with practical, "take home" data resources, tools and methods
- Information needs for AQ management
- AQ data sources
- Analyses tools and methods
- Spatial and temporal patterns
- Integration of multi-sensory data and models
- AQ management-oriented analyses for India
Day 2: Broader aspects of air quality will be covered, including topics like:
- Educational modules
- Special research areas
- International activities
A higher level of panel discussion of practitioners will be a forum to highlight the outstanding needs of air quality management. Besides this, action items will include charting a three year calendar for collaborative education and research.

The course will be conducted as an SERC School (supported by DST) and is open to aspirants from all over the world. About 60 applicants will be selected. Members of academia (Faculty, Post-doctoral fellows and PG students), air quality management practitioners in the industry, middle and upper level managers interested in air quality management can apply. Selected academic candidates will be provided train fare (3rd AC return fare). Besides this, the registration, boarding and lodging expenses will also be covered by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) sponsorship, for the duration of the school. Participants will be accommodated at MTNL Guesthouse, on a twin sharing, first-come-first-serve basis.
Those from private industries will be charged registration fees of Rs 2500 per person, and fees for accommodation, if available, as applicable.
