For the first time ever, Times Higher Education magazine (THE), UK, has released a list of reputation rankings for top ten Indian institutes. IISc, Bangalore, topped the ranks followed by IIT Bombay and AIIMS. On sixth place is The University of Delhi— the first full-fledged university on the list.

The India Reputation Rankings, 2013:

  1. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore
  2. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
  3. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
  4. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
  5. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
  6. University of Delhi
  7. Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
  8. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
  9. Aligarh Muslim University
  10. University of Hyderabad

Following the pursuit of World Reputation Rankings for institutes, THE announced an India-specific list. The rankings are based on subjective, but expert assessment of senior, published academics.

On the global list, however, the performance was dismal with not a single Indian institution making it to the top 100 of the 'World Reputation Rankings 2013.' Harvard University tops the list, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University.

While speaking to a leading national daily, Phil Baty, editor, THE Rankings, mentioned on the global scale IISc Bangalore would be 130th, IIT Bombay in the 192nd place, with all other Indian institutions falling outside the global top-200
