The majority of students face a hectic and rushed college life. Tight deadlines, regular studies, endless reading lists and exams are a part of the students' everyday lives. This can take a toll on the student's mental and physical health over a period.

Detrimental Effects of Stress

Too much stress can cause digestive disorders, migraines, anxiety, an over consumption of sugar or caffeine and insomnia, and a sense of being overwhelmed or depressed.

Tips for Students to De-stress

Set Achievable Goals

Students can take an active part in allowing opportunities to unwind and relieve some of their stress in different ways. A major source of stress is the amount of work needed to be done by the given due date. Students should break down all their assignments into manageable goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the vast amount of work waiting for them. By breaking down each assignment, and creating a game plan or a schedule for when it is due and how much work needs to be put into each assignment, students can set achievable goals for themselves. As each goal is met, the student is rewarded and further motivated to continue setting goals and creating a schedule they can handle.

Balance Work and Play

Students are under just as much pressure socially as they are academically. Parties, mixers and frequent get-togethers are a constant temptation for students, especially for new students in a university. Although, extracurricular activities should be embraced, they also need to be balanced out in order to avoid piling on more stress and from being overtired and behind on schoolwork. Along the same lines, students that take no time to enjoy themselves often find they are just as stressed as their overtired partying counterparts are. Each student must find his own balance between work and play in order to maintain academic success and to enjoy college years.

Stay Healthy

Nothing will add more stress than feeling run down, fatigued and sick. This only adds more stress and creates a vicious cycle for the student. Eating right can help provide the body with the fuel it needs to meet all of its demands. Just as getting adequate rest is important. Ensuring enough sleep is also important, since it is a way to curtail and alleviate stress. It is also a great way to stay healthy, so the student will not have to miss as many classes due to illness.
