Trained and competent teachers are needed at higher education level to increase student enrollment, said Mr. Srikant Kumar Jena, Tamil Nadu Minister for Chemical and Fertilizers, while addressing the students of the JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science on the Graduates' Day of the institution.

Mr. Jena noted that since Independence, India has evolved a lot in terms of education infrastructure. The number of universities have increased from 20 to 500, colleges from 500 to 21,000 and teachers from 15,000 to 6 lakh! However, there is still a huge gap in supply and demand of trained and competent teachers at higher education level to encourage the enrolment of students, especially in the Science stream.

The 12th Five Year Plan, which is to be implemented from 2012 to 2017, aims at achieving 21% gross enrolment ratio of students at higher education level, which is quite an ambitious plan. To achieve this, Union and state governments are spending huge amounts on increasing the number of colleges, universities, technical institutions and vocational training institutes throughout the country.

Measures like accreditation and grading the colleges are being implemented to ensure that students get quality education. However, such a project will result in huge demand for competent and trained teachers.

The news is being seen as good news by all those who are interested in teaching.
