UGC Comes Up with New Teacher-Student Ratio
A new standard for teacher-student ratio has been set up by University Grants Commission (UGC). The new norms will be binding on all UGC-approved institutions, central universities and deemed-to-be-universities. As per the new norms, the teacher-student ratio for different streams has been defined. According to UGC, undergraduate programmes in sciences, the ratio will be 1:30. For undergraduate programmes in media and mass communication, the ratio will be 1:15 respectively. However, for B.Ed. programme, the ratio will be in line with the norms laid by National Council for Teacher Education.
On the other hand, the teacher-student ratio for Postgraduate Science, and Media and Mass communication programmes the ration will be 1:10. For Humanities, Social Sector, Commerce and Management Postgraduate programmes, the ratio will be 1:15. With new norms set up by UGC, teachers will be able to give more attention to students, thereby bringing quality in the entire education system. All these new standards have been set up by the UGC after the recommendations of Professor J.A.K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University.
