Vocational education launched in Haryana schools
Haryana has launched a pilot project to introduce vocational education at school level. Conceived by National Vocational Education Qualifications Framework (NVEQF), the project was launched in 40 secondary and higher secondary schools in the state with an aim to enhance employability of students in the job market. The system is based on a competency-based modular approach with provision for credit accumulation and transfer, linking vocational education with general education in schools.
The Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said that to promote vocational education, the government will soon open about 100 community colleges across India. Read more
Providing locally relevant vocational education programme will help the government bridge the gap between what students are taught at school and the kind of skilled manpower that the industry needs. In the pilot project, vocational education will be imparted to students of classes IX-XII in four fields – automobiles, retail, IT and security.
The scheme is sponsored by the Centre, which will provide financial support for both infrastructure and capacity building in schools for introduction of vocational courses. It will also facilitate recruitment of trained teachers and partnership with local industries to provide hands-on training to students. See details
It is expected that the multiple entry and exit facility provided in the framework will help in mitigating the issue of school dropouts, and bring earlier drop-outs back into the fold of formal and informal education system.
