Wait continues for meta-university launch!

It was an exciting moment when four of the top universities and institutes in India - Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi and Delhi University (DU) – decided to launch a meta-university in 2012. The meta-university would allow students to choose courses from any of the participating institutions and get a customised degree.

JMI was the quickest in preparing the courses and getting them approved by its academic council. Delhi University soon caught up with JMI. They launched a Diploma in Public Health and a Masters in Mathematics Education (which will be equivalent to M.Sc in Mathematics Education). However, IIT-Delhi and JNU said that they would need more time to work on the details like how the courses will be conducted and shared between universities, who will hand out degrees, and how credit-sharing will work to complete a course.

The Meta-university launch had got into a slow gear! Expect to be launched earlier this year, its delayed by nearly six months and it seems that the project may launch in January, 2013.

A joint admission committee of JMI and Delhi University is working on a schedule for the courses they are offering. The course intake has been fixed at 20 in the first year (10 each for JMI and DU).

Masters in Mathematics Education will include math-based communication, innovative teaching methodologies, and substantial number of projects which will be guided by faculty members of both the universities. The course will be open for students from other universities too, provided they have studied at least two papers in mathematics of 100 marks each.

It is believed that the tentative date of the entrance test of the course is December 2, 2012 and the course might commence on January 3, 2013.
