The West Bengal government has announced that all students from class 1 to 8 will be promoted to the next class in view of the current situation due to coronavirus pandemic.

The West Bengal government has announced that all students who are studying in class 1 to 8 will be promoted to the next class in wake of the emerging situation due to COVID-19 outbreak,

The School Education department has decided that there will no detention of students from class 1 to 8, Partha Chatterjee, Education Minister, West Bengal said.

"The department is directing all state-run and state-aided schools in the state to fully enforce no-detention policy for all those who are studying up to the eighth standard, in view of the current situation," the Minister said.

Due to coronavirus pandemic, the school education department had earlier instructed the closure of all educational institutions around the state from March 16.

This resulted in suspension or inordinate delay in holding class exams in different schools apart from the suspension of classes.

"The Education department is chalking out ways to conduct classes from 9 to 12 during this lockdown period. This can be done with the help of technology, video conferencing and mail. The department is awaiting consent from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to hold these online classes," he said.

Many private schools, under the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CICSE) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum, are already holding online classes from classes 5 to 12.

On April 1, Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has directed the CBSE to promote all students of classes 1 to 8 to the next class in view of the situation in the country due to the coronavirus outbreak.
