Coronavirus: JMI holds Google Meet to solve issues of faculty teaching online

For participating in the session, overall 200 faculty members out of about 450 registered participants including directors of centres, heads of departments, deans, professors, associate and assistant professors were invited for attending the sessions.

Amid the nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19, universities and schools have implemented online teaching. With regards to the online teaching, Jamia Millia Islamia lately held a two-day online faculty development programme. For taking part in the session, overall 200 faculty members out of about 450 registered participants including directors of centres, heads of departments, deans, professors, associate and assistant professors were invited for attending the sessions. According to Dr Shikha Kapoor, the rigorous programme helped them get skills of Google Classroom, use of e-Resources and different tools of the G-Suite to enable the teaching-learning process. The well planned and conducted programme through the Google Meet introduced them to a number of Google tools.

At such tough times when Physical Distancing is a must, the tools could be used interestingly and innovatively. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related technical sessions emphasised on the development of suitable skills amongst teachers. It was aimed at enabling them to hold online classes and acceptance of the Learning Management System (LMS) in the minimum possible time for addressing the curricular requirements of the students. The programme also consisted of a session on remote access to the JMI library and Open Educational Resources (OERs).

For sharing the best practices and capacity building of JMI faculty members for online teaching-learning process, Prof Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) conceived the idea of a two-day Online faculty development programme. The idea was further progressed by a team of experts led by Prof. Furqan Qamar, Center for Management Studies, JMI and former Secretary General, AIU.
