Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus/COVID-19, top American Universities have decided to cancel classes and give online lessons, affecting thousands of students. The list of Universities who have decided to close down their campus and give online lessons includes major University names like Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, and more. After the beginning of the Spring break, Harvard University announced the shutdown of classes and its transition to online lessons by Monday i.e. March 23, 2020. The University, located in Cambridge, Massachusets that has students studying from all across the Globe, has asked its 36,000 graduate and undergraduate students not to return after the spring break as the University will be continuing with the classes online and students can study remotely. The University as the students to follow the instructions until further notice.

In an official statement posted on the University’s official website, Harvard president Lawrence Bacow stated that the decision has been taken to minimize the need to gather in large groups. Without going quite so far, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), also based in Cambridge, canceled all gatherings likely to attract at least 150 people until May 15. The statement further added that starting this week, the classes with more than 150 students will move online. Following the same, many Universities in New York like New York University and Fordham have also decided to cancel their classes and decided to switch to remote learning.
An official notification released by the Princeton University in New Jersey stated that on March 23 onwards it would move all lectures and seminars online to at least April 5. The University has also canceled events of more than 100 people. At least five Universities in California including Berkeley and Stanford have suspended all the in-person classes. Talking about the situation, a spokesperson for the American Council of Education (ACE) stated that it is for the first time ever higher education is facing the greatest short-term challenge in a generation.
