Amid the global crisis due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, Students of Jadavpur University opened a community kitchen to feed at least 200 poor people daily, who are rendered jobless due to the ongoing nationwide lockdown.
According to a student who is also a part of this supportive programme, March 30, the students initiated this generous act with the support of teaching and non-teaching staff and the authorities of the university. The community kitchen is located at one corner of the vast campus area of the university.
While talking about the arrangements the students have to make to prepare the meals, Avik, a student of JU revealed that preparing ‘khichdi’ costs them Rs 2,000 every day and another Rs 2,500 goes in preparing hand sanitiser by students of the science departments under the supervision of teachers.
The students are gathering the resource through crowdfunding and all the collection is being put on record. To collect more, they are trying to reach out to people in suburbs, North and South 24 Parganas districts, Howrah, East Midnapore and other places through their contacts and students living in these areas.
On March 24, PM Narendra Modi declared a nationwide lockdown in order to control the COVID-19 spread in the country. The decision is taken in favor of the country’s health but it has hit the people of low economic strata really bad. Many people have lost their jobs, many families are left with no income. In this scenario, the step taken by the students of Jadavpur University came out as a great help for these people.
