AICTE in its latest guidelines released for the academic institutions asked the institutes to take responsibility and discourage fake news by reporting the matter to concerned authorities.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) directed academic institutions to discourage fake news. The nationwide lockdown due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus led to postponed examinations, closure of academic institutions, delay in results and more. Such unexpected events gave birth to multiple fake news. Fake public notices regarding the revised exam schedules for postponed exams, result dates, admission dates, and other academic activities started making rounds on the internet.

Educational bodies such as the University Grant Commission (UGC), National Testing Agency (NTA), AICTE along with Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) time and again warned students against fake news and fake public notices released in the name of universities and education boards of various states. Recently, NTA and AICTE also advised students and parents to check the authenticity of the news before believing them. In order to do so, the Agency asked them to always check the official websites of the education boards, universities, colleges, etc.

Now, AICTE in its latest guidelines released for the academic institutions asked the institutes to take responsibility and discourage fake news by reporting the matter to concerned authorities. The Council also urged the institutions to regularly update their websites in order to assist students and parents with authentic information. While stating the point to discourage fake news, AICTE said, ‘Various interest groups/individuals are circulating fake news on social media platforms thereby creating misinformation and rumours. Discouraging any such fake news and reporting the matter to concerned authorities would be the prime responsibility of all stakeholders. It is also advised that any information published on the official Website of MHRD/UGC/AICTE only may be relied upon. Hence, these websites may be regularly perused for any updates. Similarly, for other government circulars, official websites of the concerned Ministries /Departments may be referred to.’
