COVID-19: UGC urges varsities, colleges to contribute for PM's Relief Fund

University Grants Commission has appealed all educational leaders to contribute for Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, to support the government in its fight against COVID-19 pandemic.  

University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested all the Vice-Chancellors of the Universities, Directors, Principals of Institutes and Colleges to ask both the teaching and non-teaching staff in their educational institutions to come forward and contribute for Prime Minister's National Relief to fight coronavirus pandemic in the country. 

The Commission will be making a humble contribution of one day salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, Professor DP Singh, Chairman, UGC said.

Expressing his concern, Professor D P Singh, said that our country and the world is passing through a very crucial time due to this COVID-19 outbreak The number of positive cases is increasing day by day. We, the educational fraternity, plays a major role in making people aware of the precautionary measures they need to take to safeguard themselves and avoid its further spread. Along with this, it is my humble request to everyone attached to this fraternity to come forward and contribute financially, to help government with its efforts to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.  

The letter further stated that in this moment of crisis, we all should stand together for the well-being of our country, and I am sure this contribution by you all, will go a long way in serving humanity. 

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the launch of a relief fund, to combat the present situation in the country due to COVID-19 and similar situations arising in the future. Named as the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund or PM CARES, the fund will be headed by the Prime Minister. The fund includes Defence Minister, Home Minister and Finance Minister as its members.

The government in a statement said that the coronavirus spread has been alarming and is posing severe health and economic ramifications for our country. We have been receiving many requests for making generous donations, to help government in this emergency situation. For that, we have started PM CARES fund, and we hope together we will able to eradicate this virus from our country.
