How Covid-19 is Reshaping the Education Sector in India: Five Reforms to Watch Out for in 2023

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the education system in India and around the world. Schools and colleges have been closed for months, forcing students and teachers to adapt to online and remote learning modes. However, this crisis has also created an opportunity for innovation and transformation in the education sector. Education with technology has evolved and emerged over the past few years, and Covid-19 has accelerated this trend.

The future of education is digital and we need to prepare students for the future job/industry, where technology is omnipresent. With artificial intelligence (AI), the traditional classrooms will not exist in the same way. Students will no longer need to take notes, raise hands for doubts, or attend physical classes. Instead, they will use gadgets for all the assignments and teachers will incorporate virtual reality experiences and interactive whiteboards in the instructional plan.

AI has had a revolutionary impact across various fields. Virtual assistants and tutoring systems are increasingly being used in classrooms to help students and teachers manage time. Online and remote learning systems also use AI to adjust the pace of teaching. Furthermore, language translation technology is being utilized in educational settings. Overall, learning management systems have seen an exponential increase in the usage of technology, which is going to surely increase in 2023.

However, AI also has its own set of challenges: ensuring fair and equitable rollout of this highly disruptive technology, which does not exacerbate existing inequalities in the education system. For instance, access to internet connectivity, devices, and digital skills may vary across different regions, socio-economic groups, and genders. Therefore, policy makers and educators need to ensure that no one is left behind in the digital revolution.

Another reform that is going to take shape in the education sector is remote, digital and personalized learning. Innovative methods and personalized learning approaches will cater to the unique strengths, needs, talents and interests of each student, as proposed in the New Education Policy. Students will have more flexibility and choice in their learning paths, and teachers will be able to provide more individualized feedback and guidance. This will also enable students to learn at their own pace and style, and foster lifelong learning habits.

Project-based and well-designed pedagogy is another reform that will be crucial in 2023. Skills are more important than any traditional levels of learning. The approach "one size fits all" will not work.

To progress, students will require project-based and well-designed pedagogy to be a futuristic skill force. Project-based learning involves students working on real-world problems or challenges that require interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. Well-designed pedagogy involves using evidence-based practices and strategies that enhance student engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are two technologies that will also transform the education sector in 2023. These technologies provide real-time information and immersive experiences that enhance learning. AR textbooks are also available, which provide students with an in-depth understanding of various subjects. AR is used in museums as it creates immersive learning experiences for visitors. VR is used to simulate environments that are difficult or impossible to access in real life, such as outer space or historical sites. VR can also create scenarios that allow students to practice skills or explore concepts that are otherwise abstract or complex.

The future of education is skill education. Technical training will be more valuable than any traditional degree, because in the times to come, in-depth knowledge of technology or skill will make the generation more employable. They can choose anything from science/technology/engineering/mathematics (STEM) fields or other emerging domains such as data science, cybersecurity, blockchain, etc. Skill education will also involve developing soft skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, etc., which are essential for the 21st century workforce.

Curricula will undergo significant changes, with digital literacy and providing equitable access to quality learning methods through innovative methods being the focus. The most progressive trend in 2023 is not only about imparting knowledge. It is about inspiring the next generation of innovators, problem solvers and creators who will lead towards a better and brighter future.
