IND-SAT exam to offer scholarship to Asian, African students

During her Budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday formulated an exam -- IND-SAT -- which will be conducted for Asian and African students for scholarships to study in India. During her Union Budget 2020-21 presentation, she also asserted that the Centre would soon declare a new education policy for which the government has already received over 2 lakh suggestions on it. She also said Rs 99,300 crore has been allocated for the education sector and Rs 3,000 crore for skill development for the next fiscal.

The finance minister also said that steps would be taken to attract external commercial borrowing (ECB) and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the education sector. She further stated that the government planned to start a programme for urban local bodies to offer opportunities for internship to young engineers. She also asserted that National Forensic University and National Police University were being proposed, while preparing to permit degree level full-fledged online education programme by organisations ranked in the top 100.

To deal with the dearth of doctors, the government has also proposed to attach medical colleges with district hospitals on the PPP model. She informed that the government was keen to announce and introduce a new education policy. She further stated that degrees could be be taken online soon and would be offered by the top 100 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked institutes.

During this year's budget, the finance minister suggested many big-ticket reforms, some of which have been discussed above. The Government has been working to bring reforms in the education sector and the allocation of about 1 lakh crore to the education sector speaks volumes about this.
