Delhi High Court said that the JNU students, who haven’t registered for the new academic year yet can do so under the old hostel manual.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration agreed that the students registering from January 24 to February 3, 2020, will not be charged revised rent for the hostel room, following the decision of Delhi High Court. According to the university’s registrar, Dr Pramod Kumar, the students registering till February 3, 2020, will not be charged late fine as well.
On January 24, the Delhi High Court also said that the JNU students, who haven’t registered for the new academic year yet can do so under the old hostel manual. On the plea of student union challenging the decision to amend the hostel manual, the High Court has also sought the varsity’s response. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the University Grants Commission (UGC), who were impleaded in the matter also received a notice from a Bench of Justice Rajiv Shakdher.
JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh and other office bearers Md Danish, Satish Chandra Yadav, and Saket Moon challenged the minutes of the Inter Hostel Administration issued on October 28, last year, the jurisdiction of the High-Level Committee constituted on November 24 and recommendations made by it by filing a plea against them.
Calling the decisions taken by IHA ‘malafide, arbitrary and illegal’ the petition has sought a direction to reject the Draft Hostel Manual. It also claimed that the decision make changes in the hostel manual is contrary to the provisions of the JNU Act,1966, Statutes, Ordinances and the Hostel Manual.
Last year, in October, the JNU administration had decided to hike the hostel fee, saying that it hadn’t revised the same for 19 years. As per the new changes, students were to pay a service charge of Rs 1,700 per month. Single room rent was increased from Rs 20 per month to Rs 600 per month and Rs 10 per month to Rs 300 per month was the increment announced for a double-sharing room. The students protested against the same, demanding complete rollback of the hostel fee hike.
