Karnataka School Reopening: Karnataka commenced offline classes for students of Classes 6 to 8 on Monday, i.e. September 6. The reopening of schools is taking place following strict COVID-19 protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP). According to the directions released by the government, schools have been reopened in taluks where the COVID-19 positivity rate is below 2 per cent. The government took the decision to reopen schools after taking approval from the state's technical advisory committee on COVID-19. Various media reports suggest that the department had been interested in reopening schools amid the declining cases of the novel coronavirus. However, considering the ongoing pandemic situation, the decision was on hold. After discussing the situation with the technical advisory committee, the government decided to reopen schools for Classes 6,7 and 8.
The government had already been receiving requests for reopening on various social media portals. Parents and students also approached the government on its various visit to different parts of the state. Considering the academic loss and difficulties faced by students, the state government decided to reopen schools under strict protocols. A consent letter from their parents to attend offline classes is a must for students. The offline classes are not compulsory, students can choose to attend online classes as well. According to the order released by the government, the offline will be conducted on alternate days, each with 50 per cent attendance. Schools will open five days a week, and the remaining two days (weekend) will be used for sanitizing the premises. On August 23, the government commenced offline classes for students of Class 9 to 12.
