UGC has directed all the Universities and colleges across the country to create awareness regarding the new NEP among the teachers, students, officials and other stakeholders in the Higher Education System.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all the universities and colleges across the country to create awareness regarding the new National Education Policy (NEP) among the teachers, students, officials and other stakeholders in the higher education system. The universities and colleges have been asked to share the activities in this regard on the university activity monitoring portal maintained by UGC.
“There is a need to create awareness about NEP amongst teachers, students, officials and other stakeholders in the higher education system. In this regard, you are requested to conduct webinars and related online activities to discuss various policy highlights and implications of the policy with various stakeholders,” UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said in a letter to Vice Chancellors.
The New Education Policy (NEP) was approved by the Union Cabinet at a meeting which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. New Education Policy replaces the 34-year-old National Policy on Education framed in 1986 and is aimed at paving the way for transformational reforms in the school and Higher education sector.
The Union Cabinet has given its nod to the NEP 2020 on July 29. The policy's focus on Higher Education in the country has a far-reaching impact and proposes to restructure the higher education into three categories of the institutions that conduct research, teach and degree-granting colleges. The policy also proposed to discontinue M.Phil courses and a 4-years bachelors' degree with research. The policy also called for single higher education regulator called Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). These bodies will replace autonomous bodies like University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
