The new courses under Indian Knowledge Tradition includes Veda, yoga, science, vocational skills, Sanskrit language, Ramayana and Mahabharat narratives, Bhagavad Gita teachings, and Maheswhara sutras, among others.
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has introduced a new curriculum. NIOS new curriculum will introduce ancient Indian Knowledge and heritage to elementary classes at 100 madrassas. Revised courses in the NIOS New Curriculum are a part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NIOS New Curriculum includes 15 courses on the 'Bharatiya Jnana Parampara' or Indian Knowledge Tradition. The introduced courses are similar to classes 3, 5 and 8 of elementary education.
"We are starting with 100 madrassas and will extend the programme to 500 in the future," NIOS chairman Saroj Sharma said.
However, it is totally the discretion of the learner to opt for subject combination from the bouquet of the subjects provided by NIOS. The Education Ministry has said that there are “plans to accredit around 500 more Madrassas with the NIOS".
The ministry of education, in a statement, said: “It is clarified herewith that NIOS accredits Madrassas under the Special Provision for Quality Education of Madrassas, or SPQEM. Various subjects are offered to learners under this provision-without any hard-line boundaries of fixed subject combinations unlike that in the formal education system.”
Currently, NIOS New Curriculum is focused on introducing a basic course for classes 3, 5 and 8. The 15 new courses under Indian Knowledge Tradition include Veda, yoga, science, vocational skills, Sanskrit language, Ramayana and Mahabharat narratives, Bhagavad Gita teachings, and Maheswhara sutras, among others.
NIOS is an autonomous institute under the Education Ministry of India. NIOS is responsible to cater education to the students who cannot afford to attend regular classes. NIOS New Curriculum has been introduced by Union education minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal. While releasing the study material, he mentioned that India is a powerhouse of ancient language, science and culture. India has all the capabilities to become a knowledge superpower with a rich and ancient heritage.
The education minister further said that the NIOS New Curriculum's benefit would be extended to the students in India and the Indian community across the globe.
As per the clarification issued by the Ministry of Education, "It is totally the discretion of the learner to opt for the subject combination from the subjects provided by the NIOS".
