Punjab CM forms committee to suggest reforms in higher education

The committee will be headed by Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Vice-Chancellor, Jaspal Singh Sandhu. The step is taken amid the devastating increase in the number of novel coronavirus cases and restrictions imposed in order to contain the virus. 

COVID-19 Impact: The chief minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh recently constituted a committee comprising vice-chancellors of universities to suggest examination and curriculum reforms in higher education in the state. The committee will be headed by Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Vice-Chancellor, Jaspal Singh Sandhu. The step is taken amid the devastating increase in the number of novel coronavirus cases and restrictions imposed in order to contain the virus. According to the reports, the committee will submit its report within 60 days to the state government.

Reports suggest that the committee will look into the introduction of new courses and digital education and will submit its report within a two-month timeframe. Announcing the initiative, Punjab CM took to Twitter and wrote, “VCs to work out examination reforms and review curriculums, to scale up the quality of higher education in the state in line with the advances taking place across the world.” Check the official tweet below:

Meanwhile, Singh also digitally launched online courses started by GNDU, Amritsar, for the Punjabi diaspora settled across the globe. Punjab CM also ordered the release of Rs 5 crore for establishing a language award to promote Punjabi. Amid all the chaos and scare created by the novel coronavirus, the Ministry of Education on April 3, 2021, directed all the centrally-funded universities and institutions to postpone all the offline examinations and schedule them on later dates after analyzing the COVID-19 situation in its region. The ministry also clarified that educational institutions can conduct online exams as per schedule.
