Punjab government announced summer vacation for higher education institutions. According to the media reports, Punjab Higher educational institutions will remain shut for summer vacation from May. The government colleges and universities all across the state will observe summer vacations for a month. The summer break will be observed from May 15 to June 15.
A tweet posted by the Punjab government declaring the vacations reads, “The Punjab Government has decided to declare summer vacation in Government Colleges and Universities of the state from May 15 to June 15."
All academic institutes across India are closed since March 16 due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Later the government of India announced the complete shutdown of all the schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutes by imposing a nationwide lockdown in order to contain the spread of contagious virus COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the vice-chancellors and controllers of exams of Panjab University, Chandigarh; Punjabi University, Patiala; and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, along with state government officials discussed policies regarding examinations and admissions for the next session in universities and colleges of the state through a video-conference on April 29.
During the meeting, the 10-page UGC guideline 2020 and Punjab state COVID exit strategy were discussed. Talking about the exit strategy of the state, the secretary of higher education and languages, Punjab. Rahul Bhandari stated, “In the meeting, it was discussed that examination of final-year students could be conducted between July 1 to 15 if the lockdown is lifted.”
Another report states that the Punjab state government launched an eight-day-long online video competition. On May 6, Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla revealed that over one lakh children participated in the video competition, creating a world record. The minister also stated that the campaign engaged around 2.5 crore people on social media.
The state government is taking multiple initiatives to keep the children engaged and increase their learning during the lockdown period. On April 27, the government launched a campaign, named 'Ambassadors of Home', inviting students from schools across 22 districts of Punjab to share their positive ideas amid the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the data revealed by the minister, approximately 1,05,898 schoolchildren shared their videos. The campaign also created a world record as never before so many students participated in an online video competition.
