Marking its 67th Foundation Day, IIT Delhi released a ‘Research Impact Report’ showcasing remarkable achievements, including the incubation of 147 startups, the execution of 271 international research collaborations, and groundbreaking innovations such as affordable COVID-19 diagnostics and advanced ballistic armor for the Indian Armed Forces. The report underscores the institution’s pivotal role in advancing science, technology, and societal welfare over the past seven years (2018–2024).

Released by Jaya Jagadish, Country Head and SVP, Silicon Design Engineering, AMD India Private Limited, and IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee, the report also highlights IIT Delhi’s cumulative research funding of ₹2,340 crore and consultancy projects worth ₹300 crore. The institute’s contributions span diverse fields such as medtech, AI, quantum communications, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure.

The report underscores the incubation of 147 startups by IIT Delhi faculty and alumni, spanning diverse domains such as agritech, AI/ML, cybersecurity, biotech, e-mobility, and space technology. Among the standout contributions is a single-step, probe-free COVID-19 diagnostic tool, offering affordable and scalable testing solutions at less than $5 per test. Another significant milestone is the development of ABHED Body Armor, a lightweight, advanced ballistic protection system now licensed to industries for use by the Indian Armed Forces.

International collaborations have also flourished, with 271 projects funded by global agencies and 139 initiatives supported under the Institute’s joint seed funding program. IIT Delhi has expanded its global presence with a new campus in Abu Dhabi, which commenced M.Tech. and B.Tech. programs in 2024. Additionally, joint degree programs with institutions like the University of Queensland, Australia, and National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, have advanced collaborative research, benefiting over 130 doctoral students.

Over the past seven years, IIT Delhi has undertaken more than 5,100 sponsored research projects, with cumulative funding exceeding ₹2,340 crore, and executed over 3,000 consultancy projects valued at ₹300 crore. These efforts have resulted in groundbreaking innovations, including quantum secure communication technologies, advanced materials for 6G applications, next-generation solar cells, and AI-powered solutions for environmental monitoring and traffic forecasting.

Q:   How good are the BTech placements at IIT Delhi?

A:

A total of 1,200 offers were made and 1,150 students were placed during the Phase 1 of IIT Delhi placements 2025. Further, more than 50 international offers were made during IIT Delhi Phase 1 placements 2024-25.

According to Engineering NIRF report 2024, the median package offered during BTech placements 2023, 2022 and 2021 stood at INR 20 LPA, INR 20.5 LPA and INR 17.6 LPA, respectively.

According to unofficial sources, the placement rate recorded during IIT Delhi BTech placements 2023 was 90.01%.

In healthcare and medtech, IIT Delhi’s contributions include biosensors for pathogen detection, innovative exoskeletons for stroke rehabilitation, bioresorbable cardiovascular stents, and antimicrobial fabrics to prevent infections. In the energy sector, advancements such as vanadium redox flow batteries and shadowless solar towers are paving the way for sustainable energy solutions. The Foundation Day also recognized exceptional faculty contributions through the Faculty Research Awards 2024, celebrating excellence in basic and applied research as well as early-career achievements.
