UGC's decision regarding the conduction of final-year exams by September-end is not going well with the students. Read further to know their reaction.
The University Grant Commission released its revised guidelines 2020 for final-year university and college exams on July 6, 2020. Students across the nation were desperately waiting for the UGC revised guidelines 2020 expecting cancellation of the final-year exam in the view of the ongoing pandemic situation in the country. However, passing a completely opposite verdict, UGC stated that the exams that were supposed to be conducted in the month of July will now be conducted by the end of September. The Commission also stated that the institute can choose the mode to conduct the final-year exams i.e. online, offline, or blended method. However, the guidelines do not appear going well with the students. Not happy with the UGC’s revised guidelines, students are demanding cancellation of the final-year exams.
The National Students Union of India (NSUI), a students' body affiliated with the Congress, has said the Centre’s decision to hold final semester exams to be a "narrow-minded view" and said, "it will endanger student’s health". NSUI’s Ruchi Gupta while responding to the government’s decision to hold final semester or year exams of universities and colleges across India said, “If IIT Bombay can, why not other universities?”
Stating that further postponement of the exams will increase uncertainty, anxiety and stress among them, many students started posting tweets addressing the education minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank demanding cancellation of the exams.
While UGC gave an option to the students who won’t be able to appear for the exams due to any reason would be given an opportunity to appear for special exam when the normalcy is restored, “In case a student of the terminal semester/ final year is unable to appear in the examination conducted by the University for whatsoever the reason(s) may be, he/she may be given an opportunity to appear in special examinations for such course(s)/ paper(s), which may be conducted by the university as and when feasible so that the student is not put to any inconvenience/ disadvantage. The above provision shall be applicable only for the current academic session 2019-20 as a one-time measure.” However, the decision does not appear going down well with the students. Recently, states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra canceled university and college's final-year exams considering the ongoing pandemic situation.
